Teeth Extractions

Sometimes, our experts may determine that extraction is the only solution to control infection and restore your oral health. An extraction may be needed for several reasons such as severe decay, irreparable breakage, advanced gum disease, poor positioning of a tooth in the mouth, or in preparation for orthodontic treatment.

The process of extracting a tooth begins with the administration of a local anesthetic to numb the gum, jawbone and tooth. As the tooth is pulled out of its socket, you may feel some pressure but you should not feel pain. Some teeth require sectioning prior to their removal. This might be done if a tooth is firmly attached to the socket, for a tooth that has a curved root, or an impacted tooth. It simply means that the tooth needs to be cut into sections that will be extracted individually.

After the completion of your extraction procedure, it is vital for a blood clot to form so that bleeding stops and the healing process can begin. You will be asked to bite down on a gauze pad for 30 to 45 minutes. Once the clot forms, it is very important to not disturb it. Actions such as drinking with a straw, vigorous rinsing, smoking, alcohol consumption, and strenuous exercise should be avoided.

You may feel some pain after the effect of anesthesia wears off. We will prescribe painkillers or recommend over-the-counter medications to help you control that. If you see swelling, apply an icepack on the outer cheek near the extraction site. Stick to eating cold, soft foods. Drink lots of fluids. You can also resume normal brushing and flossing 24 hours after the procedure.
